Planning for 2025 Modular Housing Summit Underway

Following the continued success of the 2024 BC Modular Housing Summit, planning is well underway for the 2025 Summit. The 2025 Summit is will focus diverse topics including the provincial government’s move to create more affordable housing options, as well as support for Member initiatives with a focus on economic and financing options. A preliminary 2025 BC Modular Housing Summit program will circulated later this year.

Noted for its central location, ease of travel to and from, and climate in early spring, the 2025 event has been booked to take place May 5-7, 2025 within the Penticton Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre. Further details on guest room blocks, event presenters, entertainment, and delegate pricing will be released over the coming months.

Board Matters

Summer 2024 Board Meeting Schedule

During the summer, the Board met on June 26th and August 27th. The next meeting is scheduled to be held by video-conference call on October 8, 2024.

2nd quarter 2024/24 Home Shipments Update

Home shipments at the end of the 2nd quarter, ending August 31, 2024, were below plan. The 2024/2025 budget was based upon an average of 53 homes per month with the actual average figure being 43 homes per month with a total of 245 homes shipped within this fiscal year.

Advocacy Program Update

Over the course of the past quarter the MHABC’s Advocacy Team has worked alongside the BOABC on the creation of a standardized Permitting Checklist and Inspection Checklist. Over the summer, our Team members met with multiple levels of government including the provincial Building and Safety Standards Branch. The major topics included Bill 44 (the legislation dealing with the creation of more multi-family complexes) and have addressed the 2024 BC Building Code, permitting, and inspections to ensure modular construction will be included in housing solution plans moving forward.

As noted within our Spring Newsletter, Team members with the help of MHABC’s marketing firm (Fresh Inc), met to develop an outreach campaign directed at continuing the branding and promotion of the industry and the MHABC. Member will begin to see these pieces launch both on our website and social media channels over the coming weeks.

Transportation Update

The MHABC Transportation Committee held a digital call with members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement Branch to discuss concerns with the restricted parameters during the upgrading of the R.W. Bruhn Bridge. Daily shut downs during daytime hours and late evening hours will heavily impact the transportation of homes as the majority are transported at night/early morning when regular traffic levels are lower. The Transportation Committee has asked that further examination into the times of closures be reviewed to better allow the flow of large transportation traffic in late evening/early morning hours. Approval for travel on highways 3 and 33 has been approved as a 5-meter-wide route. Amendments of the applicable CVSE forms will be completed very soon. An update on the timing for EOL approvals was also on the agenda with some recommendations to improve expediency.

Marketing Program Update

The MHABC Marketing Committee held a Zoom call to discuss a list of priorities they wish to accomplish over the duration of the fiscal year. The committee will be looking to make investments into updating MHABC.com, purchase of new trade show display materials and enhancing the Innovation Awards program. Final research on costing is currently being conducted.

MHABC Members to Attend MHAPP Conference

President Andersen and Contract Administrator Barter will be attending the MHAPP Conference & Annual General Meeting in Edmonton, Alberta November 20 & 21, 2024 on behalf of the MHABC. The two will take in a full day of sessions, interact with fellow members, and network with industry representatives.

MHABC Executive Director Transition and Recruitment

The Board of Directors has convened a recruitment committee which will oversee hiring of an Executive Director. A review of Executive Director job description is being given a high priority. With Contract Administrator Jennifer Barter taking on additional responsibilities, the former E/D job description will undergo some changes. At the same time, former Executive Director Gord Rattray is continuing to provide assistance to the Board and Jennifer as well being involved in the Government Advocacy initiative. He has been tasked with introducing new approaches to internal accounting and payment practices to allow an easier transition for the Executive Director, when retained.

MHABC Group Health Benefits

Please keep the MHABC’s Group Health Benefits Program in mind. Information is available by contacting the office.

Proud Supporters of the Ronald McDonald House Charity

The MHABC is a contributor to the Ronald McDonald House Charity – BC and the Yukon. Contributions are made quarterly based upon the number of homes shipped during the prior quarter. Ronald McDonald House serves the children (and families) of BC and the Yukon requiring treatment at Childrens Hospital.
